Winter is a great time for baking desserts because a lot of people suffer from seasonal affective disorder, which is a seasonal depression that happens in winter due to less sunlight. Baking reduces stress by allowing you to focus on the activity, boosts your mood by helping you relax, and provides you comfort as most people have family traditions revolving around certain sweet treats, and making those things helps you feel connected even if you are not physically near your family. Every family has different desserts they bake every year and different traditions revolving around them.

Kahk

Egyptian Kahk cookies with a bowl of dates and a cup of milk

Kahk are circular cookies popular in Egypt. They are often dusted with powdered sugar and stuffed with a mixture of honey, nuts, and sometimes dates. Believed to date back to Ancient Egypt, kahk has a rich history and is traditionally made around Easter, Eid al-Fitr, and Christmas. While they originated in Egypt, they are also popular in other countries like Sudan, although they are often not stuffed in other traditions. The crumbly, sweet cookies are a must-try and are not very complicated to make.

Achappam, also called rose cookies, are deep-fried cookies made with rice flour and are popular in India. They are made with rice flour, eggs, sugar, and coconut milk. A mold is used to ensure the cookies have a beautiful flower shape. While the origins of achappam are hard to pin down, they are believed to have been brought to India by the Dutch during colonization.

Pavlova

Pavlova is a cake-shaped, meringue-based dessert that is light and crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. It is often topped with fruit. It is debated whether it originated in New Zealand or Australia. Pavlova can be complicated to make, because meringue is very temperamental, however, if you succeed you get a sweet, light dessert that melts in your mouth and looks impressive.

Buckeyes

Buckeyes are a peanut butter candy named after the nut of a buckeye tree which they resemble. They originate in Ohio in the United States and are a Christmas staple for Ohio and much of the Midwest. Made with peanut butter, powdered sugar, and dipped in chocolate, they are incredibly sweet. We make buckeyes every year for Christmas and leave a few dozen in the freezer to eat throughout the winter.
