Must-Visit Cities That Go All-Out for Christmas
Christmas is one of the most magical and widely celebrated holidays in America, with around 90% of Americans embracing the season in their own special way. From twinkling Christmas trees, presents, and visits from Santa to heartfelt traditions like midnight mass, manger scenes, and candlelight services, the holiday spirit brings everyone together. Across the country, certain towns and cities transform into enchanting wonderlands, brimming with Christmas magic through dazzling decorations and festive events that are sure to spark joy and wonder in everyone who visits.
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Bethlehem is a small city in Pennsylvania with many historical Christmas traditions. Every evening, they have a live Advent Calendar, where a selected visitor knocks on the door of a historic home, and the crowd is greeted by a surprise from various local businesses. These surprises include musical performances, storytelling, and delicious baked goods. Bethlehem has two holiday markets inspired by German Christmas markets. With local vineyards and breweries, there are plenty of fun treats to try.
Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is a historic city on the water in South Carolina. Each year the Holiday Festival of Lights is held at James Island County Park. There is an old-fashioned carousel, marshmallow roasting, and train rides. Charleston also has walking tours that are holiday-themed and performances from the local symphony. At the historic Dock Street Theatre, you can see an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The city and the surrounding towns of Mount Pleasant and Summerville each hold Christmas parades on different days around the beginning of December. A unique parade is the Parade of Boats in Mount Pleasant, where boats are decorated in lights and figurines. If you’re feeling brave, join locals in their New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge on nearby Sullivan’s Island.
Santa Claus, Indiana

The town of Santa Claus was originally named Santa Fe, but when they found out there was already a town named Santa Fe in Indiana, they changed the name to Santa Claus. The town has fully leaned into its namesake. There is a theme park here called Holiday World which is a family-owned, Christmas-themed park full of rollercoasters. At Santa’s Candy Castle, you can get frozen hot chocolate along with other sweet treats. Santa Claus Museum and Village is also a must-visit if you’re in the area because it is home to the 1880 Santa Claus Church and a 22-foot-tall Satana statue from 1935.
New York City, New York

New York City is a popular city to visit any time of year, but Christmas is especially a great time to visit. The most iconic Christmas tree in the United States is by far The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. Standing at 74 feet tall, 43 feet wide, and weighing around 11 tons, the tree is covered in more than 50,000 lights, it is a sight to see. The Rockettes perform breathtaking Christmas performances every year that they train months for, including their kickline. If ice skating is something you enjoy, the rink in Bryant Park has been featured in many television shows and movies. New York has endless things for visitors and the list just gets longer during the holidays.
North Pole, Alaska

While not actually at the North Pole, this town in Alaska near Fairbanks is decorated for Christmas year-round. Here you’ll find Santa Claus House, a large store and post office turned holiday shop. They sell various gifts such as themed ornaments, jewelry, and of course toys. If you know any kids that celebrate the tradition of Santa Claus, you can order a letter for them to receive in December with a photo of Santa and a note explaining that they are on the nice list. In December there is Winterfest and a Holiday Bazaar, where local vendors sell unique crafts and gifts. In Fairbanks, you can see ice sculptures carved with chainsaws by ice artists from all over the world.
As the holiday season approaches, these enchanting Christmas towns across America remind us of the joy, wonder, and togetherness that make this time of year so special. From the Southern charm of Charleston to the snowy magic of North Pole, Alaska, each destination offers its own unique way to celebrate the season. Whether you’re walking the festive streets of New York City, visiting Santa’s hometown in Indiana, or marveling at the historic beauty of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, these towns provide the perfect backdrop for creating cherished holiday memories.
No matter which destination you choose, the spirit of Christmas is waiting to welcome you with open arms, twinkling lights, and the warmth of the season. So, pack your bags, grab your loved ones, and let these magical places fill your heart with holiday cheer!
